Ride/Run 100 miles? Yes you can!

We all know that people with type 1 diabetes are capable of a great many things. Standing on Everest, running across the country (I know the US and Canada, at least), racing bikes at the highest level, competing in the olympics (in both xc skiing and swimming) and doing various ultra-marathons… These things have all been completed by athletes with type 1 diabetes.

But sometimes the medical community needs a reminder. I know plenty of people who were encouraged to step back their athletic exploits after being diagnosed with type 1. One doctor even told a bike racing friend that he might consider taking up chess instead. If you ever hear of that situation happening, don’t hesitate to pass this paper on to both the athlete and the doctor. Here is a summary of type 1 diabetics taking on the The Race Across the Sky, the Leadville 100 trail and mountain bike races.
